Zeal Harris creates colorful, narrative-driven artwork that mixes painting with drawing while experimenting with various media. Her style ranges from political cartoon to caricature to urban and folk vernacular visual language. The feeling of story is often present in Harris' work—whether the characters are moving through space and time or are featured in “slice of life” moments. Harris lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.
The Color of Jacarandas in South South LA is an autobiographical artwork detailing a time when the artist and her boyfriend quickly switched seats so that it would appear that she was driving when they passed white cops. After being pulled over, the cops searched the car aggressively and asked offensive questions. The boyfriend, a former marine, shifted the conversation towards the the symbolic pins on the cops' uniforms, which eventually diffused tension and the couple was released without incident.
