Emily Harter is an interdisciplinary artist based in San Francisco, CA. Influenced by convergent backgrounds in painting, printmaking, and art history, Harter's work depicts worlds populated by hedonistic shape-shifters and ruled by cartoon logic. Drawing from, and at times directly quoting, a wide array of references, including antique-mall kitsch, 16th century European tapestries, the satirical prints of Hogarth and Daumier, and Golden Age animation, she aims to interrogate identity, obligation, and that ol’ horizon of desire.
The Supplicant features two candle holders in the shape of a person lying prone with bees stinging and bee-sting welts. Bees often emerge in Harter's work, often representing pain. In the case of "The Supplicant," the figures reference Saint Sebastian being pierced with arrows. The body is a permeable membrane, reliant on and existing in the environment surrounding it. This sculpture includes two beeswax candles.
