Since 2019, Los Angeles-based artist Elana Mann has brought groups together to activate her handmade rattles in her ongoing project "Shake, Rattle, Roll." Each hand-crafted ceramic rattle in her series of almost 100 is designed for personal, ritual, or public protest and performance. Every individual rattle has a different design and sound, and each has been used to advocate for immigrant’s rights, environmental justice, and gender equity. The rattles draw inspiration from Mann's Jewish heritage, specifically the grogger (a ritual rattle) shaken during the Purim holiday.
