Emily Marchand envelops ceramics, cooking, and community organizing in her expansive art practice. Inspired by the native and manufactured landscapes of Los Angeles, she makes colorful forms embedded with vegetables, fruits, eggs, flora, and fauna. Her sculptures, wall works, and vessels consider tenderness and care as strategies to access a range of emotions with a timely focus on both joy and grief.

The figures and imagery in this hand-made ceramic chess set are inspired by the recurring archetypes found in Marchand's work—bees, butterflies, bats, moths, flowers, birds, snakes, and the artist's pitbull, Ozzy.

Pawns are modeled on day pollinators (bees and butterflies) and corresponding night pollinators (bats and moths).

Rooks feature flowers in pots.

Day Knights are inspired by the Blue Heron and the Flamingo.

Night Knights are inspired by the Vulture and the Swan.

Bishops are coiled snakes.

Queens draw inspiration from artist Niki de Saint Phalle’s “Mama” sculptures.

Kings could only be modeled after Ozzy, Marchand's beloved companion.
